Session 4: 1 Hour

Saturday: 8:30-9:30

Part 1: 8:30-9:00

Each group will go to the assigned rooms/stations (Lauren’s Lounge, Discovery Workshop, etc.)

Part 2: 9:00-9:15

Have kids as a group have a discussion about things that are frustrating and have other kids offer tips. Example- my mom gets mad when I didn’t get my brace hours in for the day. Suggestion- every day is a new day. Talk to her about how it helps when she encourages you. Maybe set up a rewards chart, etc. Have the kids give each other tips.

Part 3: 9:15-9:30

Pick-up / clean-up / get ready for parents

IMPORTANT TALK TO HAVE WITH KIDS BEFORE PICTURE:

I am going to plant a seed in my speech to encourage their kids to wear their braces over their clothes throughout the weekend IF they want to. The group picture is a moment to shine in their brace (if they want to.) Gently encourage any kids that WANT to wear their brace over their clothes for the picture to switch their brace over. Obviously, don’t make kids feel bad if they don’t want to do it. I recommend to offer if any of the kids want to go to the bathroom and change so they can have privacy. Have a group go with a parent volunteer or group leader to the bathroom to change.

Explain how the group pictures are going to work BEFORE letting kids leave the room to switch their braces over.

Kids will get a group picture taken as the full kids/teens group BEFORE parents get added into the picture.

Group 1 will leave the kid’s room (with group leaders and volunteers) and stand where the person directing the picture tells them to. The picture will be in the lobby right outside of where the kid’s rooms are.

Group 1 will get set in the picture. Then Room 2 will fill in behind then, 3, 4, 5.

We will take the kids/teen group picture.

Then parents will fill in behind and around the kids.

Kids will then go BACK to their rooms (NOT to their parents.) Please make that very clear to the kids. And be sure to know exactly where your group is standing in the picture so you can direct them back.

Once all of the kids are back in the rooms THEN the parents come and pick them up. I don’t want 350 kid searching through a group of 400 adults trying to find their parents.

**If they do NOT want to be in the group picture- please tell them to let the group leader know and those kids will wait in the calm corner room while the group takes the picture. Don’t assume kids with black wristbands don’t want to be in the group picture. (Sometimes they just don’t want individual pictures taken.) But just gently tell everyone that if they don’t want to be in the picture they don’t have to be.
